After West Ham (1968), Watford (1982) and Southampton (2014): a dozen questions

Jake: ‘Gus didn’t feel it right to show his face here!’

Still on the national news, still getting ribbed mercilessly if someone spots the SAFCSA membership card in my wallet, still feeling numb …

So 12 questions. A mug for the best answers posted below, as judged by Monsieur Salut (who drove 1,200km to be at this debacle). You can answer one or more or all of them. You can be a supporter of any club you choose (or that chose you) but you must have a UK delivery address to qualify for the life-altering prize …

Questions:

1 If you are old enough to have been at all three 8-0 games, how did this one rate?

2 And if you got to either of the games immediately after the first two (3-0 vs Coventry 1968, 4-1 vs Norwich 1982), what are your memories of the atmosphere/morale/performance?

3 Who was the wag
that came up with the After Eight joke – and can we be sure Arsenal are not already planning to go one better?

4 What was the instant reaction
in the dressing room when the Lads got wind of Vito Mannone’s proposed whipround?

5 Which member/s of the Sunderland squad, starting line-up and three subs, have dared go out to do their own weekly shopping?

6 What persuaded Guy Poyet that Liam Bridcutt at rightback was a price worth paying for getting Wes Brown off?

  1. Q3. My missus tells me that 8 0 in bingo is known as “on the end of your foot”. If only some of our “players” were bingo fans and had managed to get the ball “on the end of their foot”.

  2. Many seem to be keeping their heads down, it almost seems like a death in the family, we are grieving we are ashamed, but the darkest hour is just before the dawn. Will this be a huge wake up call? Its time for cool heads and effective leadership, reflection definitley. Are the players up tp the challange, the first 7games would suggest yes. Is the depth of the squad sufficient? With Graham and Cabral on the bench ( neither whom are wanted) it would appear not. The next 3 games at least will be a watershed, where these questions will be answered. Consolidate do not divide the escape route is through learning from this abhoration, the Pheonix must rise from the ashes and soar above the pain. We will rise or fall based on the response from the players, be united, together and positive.

  3. In answer to Q9, Poyet took off the only Sunderland player whose head didn’t drop and who continued to give his all, I would say that Larsson was Man of the Match and give him a 5, so Keir will probably give him -5.

  4. I’m a Hammers fan and even for me that was tough viewing on MOTD, were you as bad as the highlights made you look? You’re players should quite rightly pay your away fans expenses as they were disgraceful, the first goal was a blinder, had to laugh at the saints fans shouting ‘shoot’ every time he touched the ball afterwards. Good luck for the season, I think it’s going to be a long hard season for you guys. COYI

  5. I can’t answer most of the questions because I was out of circulation at the time of this particular capitulation.
Went to Suffolk to celebrate my birthday with my wife and two friends.

What a birthday present! I switched on ” Final Score ” at about 5.15pm. I was looking at the TV from an angle, and thought it was 3-0. I then did a double take when I saw it was EIGHT – nil!

In my opinion, no professional football team should ever lose by this sort of margin, to a side in the same league, other than in farcical circumstances, say three players sent off early on, or having no goalkeeper?

A score like this indicates a lack of discipline, morale and leadership. Given that he has had a year in charge, IMO Poyet, needs to have a close look at himself, and his clueless management team.

So the answer to question 12 is ” As soon as possible “

  6. Friend of mine, Cas, probably hasn’t seen this but deserves a mention just for having been at all three, having lost none of his faith after 1968 or 1982 and likely to see it survive 2014

  7. How much are you drinking tonight? A gallon, or have you already had eight?

Enjoy your Sunday dinner, you eight nowt yesterday

To the home fans who said essentially the same to us as tou you and Pete…we replied that our shirts fitted better than the ones they were wearing
