We had a reference to Shakespearian tragedies last week and now Pete Sixsmith quotes the Bard in an appreciation of Jermain Defoe, who has been named Sunderland’s player of the year as voted by supporters. Come what may, the striker has done his job in style. Even the Londoncentric pundits are forever reminding us of the extraordinary achievement of scoring so freely for a team that’s been in trouble all season. All at Salut! Salut! Sunderland’s collective votes in the London and SE branch of the SAFC Supporters’ Association poll have been counted and duly cast: Stéphane Sessegnon emerged from your votes as our player of the season, with overwhelming support, while Jack Colback won a close contest with James McClean as Young Player of the Season.
This week’s review of what has been going on should probably discuss Spurs and Everton. But there does not seem to be much more to say about either – you can always check out what Pete Sixsmith made of each game by clicking on this link, which gives you the full Sixer’s Soapbox archive – so I will devote most of it to a reminder of the Salut! Sunderland straw poll to find the Player and Young Player of the Season.

Who, safc.com wants to know, do fans make their player of the season and young player of the season, and what were the goal, save and team performance of the season?
Voting closes on May 11 – which I hope does not mean no one will be trying to pull off the goal, save or team display of the season on May 14 against Wolves or at West ham on May 22 – and each vote is entered into a prize draw with a pair of tickets to the May 18 awards dinner at the Stadium of Light as the prize.
