Crystal Palace v SAFC ‘Who are You?’: pixie (SuperKev) and pikeys (Charlton)

Ryan Cunningham* was the first to respond when Salut! Sunderland put out a pre-season appeal for warm, witty, wise or just garrulous Palace (and Cardiff and West Ham) fans to volunteer for the “Who are You?” hot seat. Here, he shows himself to be a passionate Palace fan, overjoyed to be back in the Premier, unapologetic about the controversial goal that sent the 2004 playoff semi to penalties (remember Jeff Whitley? He – Jeff – tells Monsieur Salut he does, with some shame) and sure his team can survive …

Sunderland v MK Dons ‘Who are You?’: exorcising the Wimbledon ghosts

Jake demands answers
Jake demands answers

Last season we played them away and won despite the obligatory Cattermole red card. This season we’ve drawn them at home. Sunderland owe it to the fans to make a decent stab at the Capital One cup for a change. Can we notch our first win of the season, a good confidence booster before the trip to Palace, of will we fail yet again? John Brockwell, who chairs the MK Dons Supporters’ Association shares his thoughts with us, covering the old Wimbledon/Milton Keynes controversy, Karl Robinson’s progress as the league’s youngest manager and MK Dons’ prospects for the coming season …

Salut! Sunderland is delighted to announce the renewal of sponsorship by the US sportswear suppliers soccerpro.com for the new season’s “Who are You?” awards. More on that later. This week’s contender is Ben Gammon*, a Southampton fan and creator of the Go Marching In fan site. He expects a straightforward home win in Saints vs SAFC, acclaims Mauricio Pochettino’s ability to attract top players to St Mary’s, remembers a special SuperKev goal and laments the contempt for tradition shown by the club when launching its grim new home kit …

Here we go again.
Subject to finding a witty, warm or wise opposing supporter in each case, every Sunderland match will again be preceded here by the traditional “Who are You?” questionnaire.

As usual, prizes will be awarded at the end of the season for the responses judged by the Salut! Sunderland panel to have been the best.

Hands up those who can hardly wait for the season to open. The excitement is building, not least since few of us can have a firm idea of who will start for PDC after virtually a teamload of new signings in the close season. For a Fulham viewpoint, we asked Russ Goldman*, an American supporter who runs the Cottage Talk internet radio show, to get this season’s series off to a grand start …

Stop Press: Palace and Hull already sorted home and away. Cardiff fan/s still needed …

Fans of Hull City, or a few of them, may recognise the music. For Cardiff City and Crystal Palace supporters, it’s a new tune.

Welecome to, or back to, the Premier League. Getting there was the easy bit; now for something more demanding. Salut! Sunderland is launching its customary close-season search for warm, witty or wise followers of the promoted clubs who may be willing to answer our questions ahead of the games home and away between Sunderland and their clubs.

The Salut! Sunderland jury has spoken.

And the verdict in our 2012-2013 “Who are You?” awards – the honours presented each season for the best interviews with opposing supporters before their teams play ours – ended up, by pure coincidence, as a final between Wigan Athletic and Manchester City.

With the same outcome …

Jake says: ‘the tension’s unbearable’

Salut! Sunderland’s awards season is back.

Every Sunderland match is preceded by an interview with a fan, who may be famous, unknown or somewhere in between, of our opponents. And at the end of each season, provided we can find generous benefactors, there are prizes for the best resulting Question and Answer sessions.

The season is done and dusted and judging is nearly over, too, in the great “Who are You?” awards for 2012-2013.

The Tottenham Hotspur Who are You?: ‘Danny, Danny Goes; Arsenal sneak fourth’

Jake needs to know ...
Jake needs to know …

Hardly the words Sunderland fans want to hear. Not the dreary north London bragging rights – life’s so much more exciting at the bottom – but we want Danny, Danny Rose to see his future with Sunderland and Spurs to let him move. Our final “Who are You?” candidate of the season, the Tottenham-supporting writer Dan Fitch*, founder and owner of TottenhamBlog (“the Spurs news site that expects the worst and is rarely disappointed”) wants him back and hints that Andre Villas-Boas does, too …

It’s our Champions League final
to quote Paolo Di Canio and victory would make us safe without having to rely on others. Saints are a point better off so can also ensure Premier survival. Chris Rann*, another of Monsieur Salut’s fellow-contributors at ESPNFC.com, does the honours with a wide-ranging interview charting Southampton’s astonishing ups and downs, SuperKev’s less-than-super status among Saints fans and his dwindling attachment to the international game …

From being the toughest club at which to find “Who are You?” volunteers, Stoke City is now a source of fascinating sets of responses by fans as committed to their club as we are to ours. Russ Dutton*, probably a useful man to know in the Potteries if you need help on legal matters, is a supporter from boyhood. He tips both our clubs to stay up as the expense of Just Guess Who …
