Thierry Henry: an apology to a great striker and to France

Salut! Sunderland has come to its senses.

It now wishes to correct any impression it may have given that Thierry Henry was – how can we put this delicately? – cheating when his hand played its decisive role as France dumped the Republic of Ireland from the World Cup last night.

The great man – and, to us, that is what he was – has now spoken.

He has explained that the Swedish referee Martin Hansson was to blame for failing to see what he did. Of course. We simply hadn’t thought it through properly.

“I will be honest,” said Mr Henry, honesty being a commodity to which he had greater access after the game than during its closing stages. “It was a handball. But I’m not the ref. I played it. The ref allowed it. That’s a question you should ask him.”

We are happy to put the record straight. And to repeat our invitation to Mr Henry to accept the role of director of the Salut! Sunderland AFC (Against Football Cheats) campaign’s proposed Maradona Academy.
