What they think of us: (1) Tottenham Hotspur

Typical: the groin injury to Benty came after our bellyache …

Just an occasional look at what people connected with or supporting other clubs say about Sunderland.

You’d think Spurs would rue ever having got rid of Darren Bent.

Ridiculed by ‘appy ‘arry, derided by many Tottenham fans, written off by the Londoncenritc press. So what did Darren go and do but join us, score goals at will and force his way into the England squad.

Time for a little humble pie from down the Lane? Er, not exactly.

This is from the Boys of White Hart Lane blog:

Personally, this blog thinks we did the right thing selling Bent when we did. He was never fully settled with us and was highly unlikely to have reached the heights he had reached at Charlton or he has at Sunderland. He’s found his level – he’ll do wonders at a lower mid-table club with fewer expectations.

Re-arrange the words “arrogance” and “insufferable” into a well-known phrase or saying …

Wouldn’t it be great if he came on tomorrow and scored a couple, just to prove a point? And went on to get a hatful for us against Spurs in the Premier?

Sod’s Law: just after I’d written that, the Northern Echo reported: “Bent sustained a groin injury in training today, adding to England manager Fabio Capello’s injury problems ahead of the Wembley match.

“The severity of the injury is unclear at this stage, and it remains to be seen whether Bent is also unavailable for Sunderland’s trip to Blackburn next Monday. ”

Monsieur Salut

  1. It doesn’t matter if you are team fighting for relegation, mid table or challenging for the title, we all have the same games to play, same defences to crack etc. It was sheer arrogance on behalf of spurs to think that their top goal scorer in 2 consecutive seasons was not good enough. The fact of the matter is, when spurs signed him EVERY football fan on the lad was applauding the buy and looking forward to seeing him play and scoring goals. The majority of the people who consistently knock him have never seen him play on a consistent basis and are simply going on “hear say” of what the bitter disgruntled spurs fans are saying. At the end of the day, every Sunderland fan is happy we have our very own “mediocre” 20+ goal machine. FTM

  2. I just want to say that I’m not a spurs fan before I go on. I don’t have a team I support, I’m a football lover all teams all matches, BUT I do agree with the the spurs fans this time henwasnt good for them, his style is of a lower class team no offence to safc but it’s true you guys are a mid table team and will be for some time with a limited fan base, but I do like watching you play and good luck this year,

  3. It only seems to be the Spurs fans who are knocking him these days. Even the mags agree he is one of the leagues best finishers. All this crap about him not being able to link up play etc. So what!! He’s a striker and I want him to score goals!! Maybe the reason it never worked at spurs is because they wanted him to do all his work outside of the box and look all pretty passing the ball around in nice little triangles but maybe that’s why they haven’t won any creditable amount of trophies for a “big club” in recent years. I would happily see the rest of Darren Bents career up for safc with 10 other players behind him doing all the pretty stuff and serving chances to him on a plate. Man U did it with Cole, Arsenal didnit with Write and Blackburn did it with Shearer (admitingly Shearer massively improved in different areas of his game).

It is obviously too much of a dent on their pride and too hard to admit that they messed up and let the best finisher England has through their fingers. NOBODY can seriously knock the bloke for the amount of goals he scores. It’s a strikers job!!! You wouldn’t complain about a goal keeper because he’s crap at taking corners would you?? Mugs.
