Steve Bruce: hearts in mouths but point was earned

In his post-match e-mail from the Emirates. Steve Bruce gets it about right and salutes Danny Welbeck’s heartening return …

Dear Colin,

Our resilience was back, which was good to see. We needed a big performance because we let ourselves down at Everton last week.

I’m very pleased for the players. They got what they deserved. The last 10 or 15 minutes were a bit hairy but I thought we merited something from the game.

We still had our moments and some of our football was good. We looked a threat on the break and everyone stuck it at.

Hearts were in mouths in the last few minutes but we deserved something for our performance.

We got a little bit of luck and a clean sheet. The result gets us off 37 points – we’ve been stuck there for ages.

It was great to see Danny Welbeck back and he’s given everyone a lift.

The whole training ground has been lifted since he came back in on Thursday.

He’s a very likeable young lad and gives you that bit of quality.

He nearly got a wonder goal to win it for us.

The reaction from the fans when he came on was great – they know a good player when they see one.

We’ve missed Danny and it’s great to see him back.

All the best,

Steve Bruce

Monsieur Salut

  1. I watched this one, and am very happy with the point.
A few of our players didn’t have their best games, but I thought Bramble was superb as well as Mingolet & Bardsley. Ferdinand was ok too.
Richardson, Gyan and Sessengeon were a little bit sloppy in possession.
It was great to see Welbeck back. He didn’t see much of the ball but a flash of brilliance almost put us one up.
But it was a white-knuckle ride for the last 15 mins or so.
I think we’re lucky to get a point. Arsenal were the best team, but dogged defending earned us one.

  2. I’ll take this point as a birthday gift – one I wasn’t expecting! I should have known better, though; we usually put up a good show against teams like this. Nice SB tribute to Welbeck.

  3. That’s more like it.

Although we have to face match previews concentrating only on our top four opposition, pointing to our recent frailties and ignoring a massive loss of playing resource to injury, we should not lose sight of where we are. The squad and first team has improved enormously this season and looks like a genuine challenger for a European slot.

I would like to hear more about the fighting spirit from those players who must carry us through the next month before our high quality (and fresh) reinforcements return in April from injury. One by one they will strengthen the team and results should reflect what sort of team we have become. We must aim to be higher than Liverpool by the end of the season; in my view this is not an unreasonable target for the team that is now emerging.
