Sixer’s Sevens: Aston Villa 0 SAFC 0. So near

Jake, Sixer and brick walls

How can a team score three at Man City and then go the whole of April without managing another? Well we have only next Saturday to put that right after yet another 0-0 draw, this time in a game we might easily have lost for failing to take any of the good chances we created.

Nicklas Bendtner, who otherwise had a nightmare, was desperately unlucky to have a fine finish from Larsson’s superb cross ruled offside. McClean went close twice and Bendtner had much earlier missed a sitter from two yards. Craig Gardner collected a second yellow at the end, a somewhat harsh decision but no more so than the flag that had denied Bendtner.

Jake is exasperated

Here Pete Sixsmith captures the glory and shame, hope and despair, excitement and ennui of the Sunderland matchday experience. When, rarely, Pete is absent or delayed, a supersub does it for him and the seven-word verdict is preceded by an asterisk. Pete’s full analysis of the game will usually appear within a day or two.

The full Sixer’s Sevens archive – see link below – sums up what all Sunderland supporters feel, from darkest gloom to sublime elation, in the words of one who is usually there …

  1. To paraphrase Bjorge Lillelien on Norwegian TV in 1981 (I think):

‘Lord Nelson! Lord Beaverbrook! Sir Winston Churchill! Sir Anthony Eden! Clement Attlee! Henry Cooper! Lady Diana! Jimmy Hill – can you hear me, Jimmy Hill! Your boys took one hell of a beating! Your boys took one hell of a beating!’
