If there ever was a game that dreams were made of then few could argue that was it! There’s some sort of superiority/inferiority complex constantly spilling over from the personalities of Newcastle/Sunderland fans when it comes to the other. Whichever way you look at it, only more results of this nature will start to amend that, writes Stephen Goldsmith.

And we have Everton who, like Newcastle, have some sort of illogical power-hold over the Black Cats on the football field. Prior to the game, Graeme Anderson from the Sunderland Echo made the irritatingly accurate summation that Sunderland can play well in the North East Derbies and still generally lose or draw. I had never witnessed in my life time Sunderland turning up in one of these games and bossing the entirety of it. How all this changed on Sunday. In regards to Everton, we tonked them twice in the ill fated 96/97 season, 3-1 at Goodison and 3-0 at the last ever league game at Roker Park. I also remember beating them twice in the two seventh place finishes under Peter Reid. Since then though, well, you know very well…

If ever there was a time to play them it would be now then, right? Do they realise they are our bogey team? Does it work that way round? I asked David Fehily from the excellent footyscene.com amongst other things and got some very passionate yet educated answers. Also on this weeks podcast:

  • Wing man Gareth Barker keeps up his appearance rate offering his insight.
  • Michael Graham aka Captain Fishpaste from our cousins at Roker Report drops in to offer his.
  • The aforementioned David Fehily talks about the game, David Moyes’ future and Leighton Baines’future.
  • We talk about beating Newcastle.
