A magnificent performance, Sess-inspired but with great input from Simon Mignolet (added belatedly; thanks Vince, his spectator status late on fooled me), John O’Shea, Danny Rose, Adam Johnson, Danny Graham and one or two more, and it had to be so to overcome Howard Webb’s astonishing first-half lapses: three penalty shouts of which two were spot kicks beyond reasonable doubt, denial of Sess’s legitimate one-on-one with Krull and the leniency showed to Cabaye and, above all, Gouffran. This is the sort of day we live for as Sunderland supporters. Three-nil? Nine-one would not have flattered us too much …

First of all, credit to Ellis Short for having the courage to replace the manager at a time that all the pundits said was madness. It is a shame, as MON certainly seems like a nice man and came from the school that doesn’t automatically blame the ref for a bad result (Pardew anyone), but I have no doubt that we would not have played like that without the change in management. We were sleepwalking to relegation and MON of this season was not the man from last season. I hope not but I suspect that there is something else going on that was distracting him.
As for today, fantastic performance and I don’t think anyone can argue we deserved it. I thought there were 6 bad decisions in the game, 3 each, and if Howard Webb is our best referee then we are in a mess. We should have had 2 penalties and Gouffran should definitely have got a red card. Mignolet’s first great save from Cisse was a definite penalty and Bardsley would have been sent off. Their goal should have stood and Vaughan was just off. We haven’t had much luck recently and we probably got a bit lucky today with the timing of their bad decisions but we definitely deserved the luck.
The obsession [ particuarly from certain managers ] with refereeing decisions leads absolutely nowhere. I have played in and watched hundreds of games in my lifetime, and bet that there have been, perhaps a dozen mistakes in every one. Sometimes it helps you, sometimes not.
Occasionally, the outcome of a match rests on a refs mistake, but I’d say, rarely. The best side usually wins.
In this case, that was so. Sunderland were the better team.
What a result and performance.
Ellis Short proved absolutely right getting rid of MON and replacing him with PDC. That was a performance we would never have witnessed a month ago.
So many heros and hopefully this can kick start our recovery. We need 2 more wins and if we play like this for the rest of the season then these should follow.
At last the green shoots of recovery are appearing
Hate to say it and it does stick in my throat but you SMBs were the better side on the day might have been different if The linesman had been on his game and Cisse’s goal had counted but no complaints you lot wanted it more than us. Still think we’ll finish higher. On to next season.
Hay, Geordiedoonsouth, very good of you to pass on your congratulations for what must be after all a trying and testing time for you. The Cisse goal was legitimate and should have stood, but last season Amiobi scored an off side one that was given, what goes round comes round.

SESS outstanding and not even the back four wilted now let’s kick on and put another good performance against Everton and stay up as Paulo says you have to BELIEVE ,Npw FTM and so called safc closet supporters.

On a day when Howard Webb had a poor game it was not enough to blunt the sharpness of the steel that Di Canio has forged in less than 3weeks. It was a metaphorfic change thar seemed impossible. Well done Ellis Short for not wating to see your vision deserves reward.
