It was a better Saturday for Toulon Sporting Var – the women’s football team in a city that sits on the Mediterranean between Marseille and Nice – than RCT, the Toulon rugby team in which Jonny Wilkinson is so important a figure.
Jonny and his mates lost comprehensively (OK, only 19-14 but I bet it felt as bad as 30-12) to entirely unfancied Castres in the final of the French rugby cup in Paris. The women, coached by my new friend Amadou, thrashed my daughter’s team, Old Actonians, 5-1.
Whether you like it or not, there will be more about this. There were no Sunderland connections beyond the facts that a Sunderland supporter – Monsieur Salut – organised it, his younger daughter Nathalie played in it and plenty of Sunderland references cropped up during the afternoon.
You’ve been warned.

If you are going to publicise the abominable game of Rugby Union, I demand equal time for the far superior game of Rugby League. How are Pia Donkeys doing this season?
