Sixer’s Sevens: SAFC 1 Manchester United 2. Great start, scripted finish

At half-time, as Sunderland unexpectedly but deservedly led Manchester United one-nil after a thrilling move on the right saw Craig Gardner fire home, Pete Sixsmith‘s text combined pride and apprehension: ‘Tremendous first half. Can we hold on?’ It’s a question we tend to know the answer to. By the 62nd minute, we were 2-1 behind as Adnan Januzaj, guilty of brazen simulation on his United debut and yellow-carded for it, scored his second goal. A cheat and, for United fans, a hero in a dozen or so minutes. Pete was left ruing missed first half chances to build on the lead …

  1. They were two pretty awful goals to concede, lets hope they learn from it and move on because after that amount of effort we deserved something from the game.

We also missed two gilt edged chances and this is something else that needs to be improved upon. But are we really going to get any better than that with the players we have. I don’t know if Bally is the right man for the job but whoever comes in has got a real job on their hands to avoid relegation.

  2. Disappointed with Ball’s substitutions. Where was Mavrais and Molberg Karlsson?…. and surely Wickham has had enough chances to prove himself.About time Mandron was given ago. Be interested to see how he sets up the midfield against Swansea as Ki is not able to play. Gardner, Catts,Cabral and Johnson IMO.

  3. Poor defending for both goals . Awful header out by O’Shea for the second , not the first time he’s done that . Unlucky just to be one ahead at half time , unbelievable save by De Gea which was probably the turning point , Altidore needs to do more
of his work in the penalty area .
I thought Roberge , Cattermole and Gardner were excellent , JOhnson much better than he has been recently – and Westwood commanded his area very well
2 goals against which could have been avoided if players hadnt of switched off , but overall a decent perfomance . However its points we need not plaudits

  4. Thought we did great 1st half.
But then we just ran out of steam and ideas. We just couldn’t keep the ball and kept lumping it up to Alitdore who did OK but lost his fair share of aerial battles. The effort and the fight was there, its just that ManU had more quality.

The only thing that can stop us going down is a manager with charisma and a good tactical sense. Trouble is, I don’t think anyone is out there.

  5. Summed it up perfectly, Pete.
Bringing on Ji seemed a strange one , and we just seemed to dissolve in the second half.
Season seems to be a “what if” one. Disallowed goal vs Arsenal, Fletcher chance at WBA, EG over the bar today.
Need managerial decision in next few days. For me, it’s not Bally, but who ?
