Sunderland vs Southampton Guess the Score: can the mini-revival continue?

In his otherwise exemplary Southampton “Who are You?” interview, Sam Dobson – answering questions before the Nicola Cortese resignation – said: “… most of this Against Modern Football stuff is a load of rubbish. A lot of the things that people moan about today have always existed.”

Except, perhaps, the 1245 kickoffs for games between clubs from opposite ends of the country. This one means Sam, an ever—present at Saints games home and away, that will see him up as some ungodly hour to make the trek north.

We naturally hope Sam makes both journeys in complete safety but that the return is at least tinged with sadness at the result. Sunderland have at least twice failed to deliver in home games against the Saints when the need for points has been desperate so we could do with a rather different outcome on Saturday.

Have a go, just for fun, at guessing the right score.

There is a separate chance to win a Salut! Sunderland mug in the Guess the Score charity auction. I am keeping this open until midnight on Tuesday, the eve of our Capital One Cup second leg semifinal against Man Utd. You may remember that the mug up for sale is the one Eric Bowers won with his most recent correct scoreline prediction and the aim of helping a good cause is his idea (he already has a wall-to-wall collection of the mugs, or something like that).

Only two bids so far – mine, a tenner for Amnesty International, was quickly gazumped by Eric himself, pledging £12 to the RAF Benevolent Fund. You can top Eric’s bid here or at the original post: https://safc.blog/2014/01/west-ham-gone-man-utd-faltering-forget-formalities-man-city-safc-final/

Of course, you may wish to buy your own mug or mugs fair and square, whether or not you enter the charity auction. The problem is that the suppliers ended free postage on UK orders under £30. In order to make it viable for Salut! Sunderland to sell mugs, a single item would have to cost a minimum of say £11, maybe £10.30 if hundreds were making purchases, since dispatch even in the UK costs £2.95. Good as they are, the mugs are not worth that. If I see a way round it, I will market them again.

Talk of Adam Johnson forcing a way back into England contention was laughable on the strength of a brief but crucial cameo against Man Utd in the league cup, followed by the hat trick at Craven Cottage. On his own admission, his form has been disappointing since his move from Manchester City. Games in which he has shone have been outnumbered by stinkers.

But against Fulham, he built on his lively second-half showing against Man Utd with a display full of desire and flair.
