Sunderland v Hull: Guess the Score, make Raich Carter, Steve Bruce miserable

We have ever-presents at this site, either every home game or virtually every game home and away. Sixer gets to development squad games, too, and would doubtless turn out even if the Under 7s were playing away to Rhyl.

Not all of us can claim similar goodliness. Some live so far away that the North East of England, and the towns and cities Sunderland visit, are a world apart. Others are prevented by a variety of work, domestic and health factors from attending games.

Monsieur Salut’s away record is adequate for one who was not in the country until mid-October – Swansea as a test of faith, Everton and Fulham to warm the soul – but his home form is lamentable. Saturday will change that to a little less lamentable. Hull at home here we come.

And as we learned from Gary Clark’s excellent two part “Who are You?”, a familiar name from Sunderland’s proud history will also be present. Raich Carter. Sadly, the son of the great man, beyond reasonable doubt one of the finest players of his generation, will be in the away end.

This snatch of Wikipedia explains Hull’s secondary claim to Raich Carter’s legacy (he settled in the area during his stint at Hull and stayed there):

There is a road in Hull, that forms part of the A1033 road, named after him. Also named in his honour is The Raich Carter Sports Centre in the Hendon area of Sunderland, opened in 2001 near to where he grew up and loosely on the site of his hometown club’s first ever ground.

The opening game at the new KC Stadium between Hull City and Sunderland in December 2002 was played for the Raich Carter Trophy. The Tigers beat the Black Cats 1–0.

For the record, he played 245 times for Sunderland, 136 for Hull City.

Raich Junior is unmoved by such detail. He will be a driving a minibus full of fellow-Hull supporters up for the game they regard as their derby. Can we send him and his passengers back down the A19 in a miserable frame of mind? Will celebratory Black Sheep beer be flowing when M Salut stops over in Reeth after the match. or will he be drowning sorrows?

You tell me. Make a stab at the score.

No prize this week. A Salut! Sunderland mug was won last week even though Geoff Bethell came close to disaqualifying himself with his non-predictive prediction:

“Well we always remember the chant “We always win 2-1, We alwayas win 2-1, We ArrrLWAYS win 2-1?. Maybe after this game we’ll be able to replace the 2-1 with 3-0? But these things only appear in retrospect. We can never predict them.”

But I have decided to be generous and flexible, even though Geoff lives, inconveniently, in New Zealand. The cost of getting the mug to him means this week’s Guess the Score is for fun only. Have a go.

And Ha’way the Lads. Spoil Steve Bruce and Raich Carter’s day.

    • Just an annoying trick of headline writers, Sobs. AND would have taken me above the newsnow.co.uk 12-word limit and cut readership.

  1. High on confidence. Each player knew his place last weekend. A good controlled game and more of the same please.

    3-1 to us.

  2. 1-0 to us. Hopefully a really controversial goal to upset our beloved ex manager. Do we still play for the Raich Carter trophy? would be a nice touch.

  3. SAFC 4 – 0 Hull City Tigers

Black Cats send Tigger home with his tail between his legs and Piglet (aka FGB, Pieface & Mrs Doubtfire) too!!

  4. If we can score a goal, before the fifteenth minute then I think that there is a good chance of us destroying them – 5-1 would be my guess.

If we struggle to do that then I can see it panning out as a hard fought 2-1.

  5. I’ve been to Rhyl and I wouldn’t take a seven year old there.
2=0 with Altidore getting at least one.
