Is this the beginning of the Altidore revivial? Just as you wait two hours for a bus and along come two, you wait six months for a Jozy and along come two.
Can he do it for us? Will he be around to try? So many questions. But first the goals. Here is how ABC News Radio put it
JACKSONVILLE, Florida: In their final tune-up before the World Cup, the United States Men’s Soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Nigeria on Saturday. Jozy Altidore scored both goals for the US, snapping a 27-match scoreless drought.
After having not scored for his country, or his club team, since Dec. 4, Altidore buried a feed from Fabian Johnson in the 31st minute to open the scoring. The striker’s last tally came against Chelsea while playing in the English Premiere League for Sunderland.
Altidore then doubled the advantage in the 68th minute, stepping back across the defense and rifling a shot past Nigerian keeper Vincent Enyeama.
And then there’s Adam Johnson. Surplus to requirements, says on report. Bound for Everton, says another. Only the huge wages put people off wanting him as a proper signing.
From Premier League player of the month in January to unwanted in June.
Two more issues, then, for the Salut! Sunderland to reflect on.
Monsieur Salut
“I guess, if you put a traffic bollard in the opposing penalty area, the ball is bound to hit it at some time and end up in the net?
Diakite. Celustka, Moberg-Karlsson,Cabral, N’Diaye, Graham, Roberge. Weren’t they a load of old bollards?
On reflection, I could have made it a beach ball?
There’s nee way on EARTH the AJ to Everton on loan thing is true.
I suppose he had to score eventually? I guess, if you put a traffic bollard in the opposing penalty area, the ball is bound to hit it at some time and end up in the net?
Seriously, we all hope that this signals the start of a Josy revival. Even if only to tempt another club to make an offer.
I am relaxed about Johnson moving. He doesn’t do enough for me. One decent game followed by anonymity in the next 2/3 is not good enough. I would prefer to see Larsson in his place. Maybe not as much potential flair, but more effort and consistency IMO.
