Here’s how I started my report for ESPN:
In a week when Sunderland coach Gus Poyet bemoaned a lack of quality in his squad, Adam Johnson provided the perfect response with a winner in the Tyne-Wear derby that oozed determination, pace and skill.
The Wearsiders’ fourth victory in a row over their bitter North-eastern rivals, 1-0, and their third successive win at St James’s Park, was secured with a masterpiece of counter-attacking flair.

When I heard that the excellent Revellier had done himself a mischief in the warm up I feared the worst . As Coates came in at short notice to a rejigged defence it took us about 15 minutes to adjust as Newcastle carved out a few chances . After that we grew in confidence and were the better team and as the blogg says should have being at least three up . The mags had a few chances , notably Taylor heading against the post , but we contained them . Thought we were running out of legs in the last ten minutes untill Johnson does what he does and justice was served . Total score from the last four derbys ? 9-1 .
