Won’t cure post-Birmingham blues but test your knowledge of football anthems

M Salut with our commentary heroes on a happier day (ie when SAFC actually won a game, vs Fulham)

Monsieur Salut writes: here’s a quiz on football anthems. I managed only eight out of 10; it seemed a doddle until the questions about songs by the England squad I have spent years trying to forget. ..

Last night did not go the way most of us wished and some of us planned.

Beer in the sort of quantity I once drank it no longer agrees with me but I did hope for a glass or two of wine as a perfect complement to Nick Barnes’s eloquent commentary on another winning performance for Sunderland, with choice pieces of approving punditry from Gary Bennett.

But something work-related cropped up and I had to head to meet someone at the Bollo pub in Chiswick, west London. It happened to be quiz night and the quizmaster, who turned out to be a Leeds supporter, tried to ban the use of mobile phones to stop participants cheating. An exception was made for me, taking no formal part in the quiz (though our table did come up with a few right answers along the way), since I wanted only to be updated on all our goals at St Andrew’s.

My companions sympathised as the goals went in but at the wrong end, which these days seems to translate as any end where poor Robbin Ruiter is keeping goal. As for Barnes and Benno, it’s perhaps as well I didn’t hear what they made of yet another, by all accounts, woeful non-display.

Here, just for fun and maybe to cheer up a few of you, is another quiz. It’s about football anthems. I did well enough with the ridiculously easy early questions but stumbled when it came to the musical dross footballers have sometimes been persuaded to record.

See if you do better: it’s at https://quiz.tryinteract.com/#/5a54c5c3f4d31700145c2922, which you can also reach by clicking on the photo of the Fulwell End.

Takes the mind off Sunderland for a couple of minutes.

* And here’s an explanation of the quiz:

Considering the popularity of football, it should come as no surprise that football clubs have fans all across the world. Many fans often track their team from the comfort of their home and sometimes place bets via Betfair football bets sites. For those that are at the match, the common way fans support their team is by chanting. Although they are essentially just singing at their team, this can benefit the home team and also unnerve the opposition, contributing to home advantage.

When The Saints Go Marching In is arguably one of the most common chants sung at English grounds due to its simplicity and the fact it can be easily adapted to be suitable for a variety of teams. Generic songs are obviously the most chanted, but fans of certain clubs also have chants which are specific to their club. The West Ham song I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles [You’ll Never Walk Alone was at least as good an example until Celtic fans “borrowed” it, too – Ed} is probably the best example of this.

This quiz tests your knowledge of the various football songs and anthems that we’ve heard over the years. Try it out and see what kind of score you manage to get.
