Sixer’s Sevens: Peterborough United will be happy with that point

Pete Sixsmith  sent a text with about 20 minutes to go: “Oviedo red card. Correct and totally unnecessary” and I began to wonder  how we could hold out against a team that scores at will when we have only one clean sheet to our name. We couldn’t, but we did manage to match them and finish with a point. Should it have been three though, and will tonight come back to haunt us? We’ll find out as this season unrolls.

However, Pete’s instant seven word post-match text suggests there will be more talking points and they won’t all be about Brian Oviedo.

  1. As well as the atrocious ref, how horrible are Peterboro? They play in the image of their manager. Niggly, obnoxious, anything to win. While it seems Oviedo kicked out rather than lost his balance, it was clear from where I was that he missed the man who went down holding an area where he couldn’t have been touched had Oviedo reached him!
Also how can a team in second place choose to waste time to play for a point when playing 14 v 10? Absolutely appalling lack of ambition and I will be supporting everyone else against them all season

  2. A win on Saturday will keep the momentum going. I look forward to us playing at the Posh. They are well set up when playing away. We’ll beat them at their place. Portsmouth looking impressive

  3. Two great comments .said everything I think.

We really need to keep a clean sheet, can’t put my finger on why we cannot.

A very attack-minded side last night, which I do love to see, so a mention here to our manager too.

Must say McGeady is a luxury we cannot afford at any level.

    • McGeady is still short of match fitness and will improve. Ross was limited in his team selection last night with 8 of the squad unavailable.

  4. Five things:

    1. Yes, the refereeing standard tonight was nothing short of disgraceful, and he was ably supported by equally incompetent linesmen and the fourth official. Its not going to get any better and we need to deal with it. Just like most teams are up for trying to take a big scalp, the officials appear to be liked minded. Seriously some of the calls tonight were bizarre. I don’t know what the officials are on but can we all please have some!

    2. The effort put in by the players was immense and is a great indicator of the will to win. With a little better decision making (and shooting) we would have been well ahead at half time. McGeady did well, but just not sure he’s up to being a 90min player but that was the most effort I seen him put in for a week.

    3. Oviedo is an idiot and cost us the game with both goals building up from his former side of the pitch. I would give him a significant fine and he’s lucky Hume is out of the picture right now.

    4. Maja needs to get a bit more physical and he needs to ration his dummies, back-heels and fancy flicks as he lost position far too easily in the opening 45.

    5. We are on the right path, there were periods of some very good play tonight. If Peterborough are second then we have little to fear from the top teams, there diving around, playing the referee and time wasting were nauseating but thats what you get in this division. We still have key players missing so this is a good if disappointing result. Plenty more games to go, Keep The Faith.

  5. There appears to be no halfway house with refs in this league, either decent or utterly awful. That was a complete disgrace. Couldn’t even get throw ins right. In a sequence of totally baffling decisions the one where Power was penalised for being sandwiched just summed up the level of ability.
We were worried at half time that we hadn’t killed them off despite playing really well. The odd thing was that we created 6 or 7 chances in the first half and their keeper didn’t actually make a single save in the match!
He has a lot of credit in the bank but sadly Baldwin was at fault for both goals with a simple miscontrol leading to the first and his man then completely free for the second.
However, the thing I will take away from this is the sublime skill from Maguire, surrounded, to make space and set up Sinclair. There will not have been a better piece of skill in any game tonight, including the champion’s league
