Tuesday night
and a glance at the fixture list flags up Hartlepool United v Portsmouth as the game of the evening. Four years ago, Pompey were playing at the Stadium of Light, Old Trafford and, er, the DW Stadium. Now, they are appearing at Gigg Lane, Boundary Park and Broadhall Way, Stevenage. Next year it is likely to be Plainmoor and the Crown Ground, Accrington.

It is a dramatic fall for a club that has connections with Sunderland. Like us, they are an industrial city. Like us, they have a long history. Like us, they have had good and bad seasons. But never one like this.

Standing joke or genuine safety issue: SAFC to meet the fans

at the Football Supporters’ Federation, comes news of a useful initiative designed to find a sensible outcome to an emotive issue that divides supporters: the right to stand, or rather the lack of such right.

The FSF is to host a meeting next Tuesday (Feb 19) at the Isis pub, starting 6.30pm) “to discuss problems relating to standing at home matches”.

Importantly, the federation says SAFC officials will be present.

Pete Sixsmith‘s passion for non-league football meant that he missed what Martin O’Neill called a ‘fantastic’ match as Sunderland’s second-half onslaught, punctuated by a good few scary moments when Arsenal counter-attacked, narrowly failed to secure a deserved point. Instead, he saw Billy Greulich Smith, another SAFC supporter, grab two goals in a fine cup win for Shildon in an unknown village.
