Poyetry in Motion: SAFC v Manchester City ‘a massive win, fans outstanding’

Gus Poyet just goes on and on in his post-match e-mail. But why not? He has, after all, led his inherited squad to three successive home wins. This was a mighty one, even if beating Man City 1-0 at home is something we have to expect. It was won with a great performance – from the players but also from the crowd – and fills us with hope that all is not lost …

Sixer’s Sevens: SAFC 1 Manchester City 0. Can we always play you?

Pete Sixsmith - or supersub - does it in seven words
Pete Sixsmith – or supersub – does it in seven words

A proper-sized crowd was in great heart, as even low crowds are when Sunderland are involved, and Bardo finishing like SuperKev capped a great first half in which we passed quite superbly and made a mockery of being second bottom (bottom if losing today). We didn’t lose. We did what we always do, beat Man City at home 1-0 – that’s four in a row – and now look forward to real progress. Wes Brown was magnificent, Bardo and Ki and Johnson and (despite that iffy tackle) Larsson were among the other heroes and spare a thought for Gus Poyet. he got them passing. Pete Sixsmith, as ever, captures it in seven words, Sixer’s Sevens, and will be back with the nest matchday report you’ll find …

The Manchester City ‘Who are You?’: surely we won’t play like Norwich

Jake demands answers

Mind, Norwich fans probably thought they would never play like that either. Fresh from the 7-0 and 5-2 tonkings of the Canaries and hard-of-thinking Russian racists, Manchester City have the more onerous challenge of Sunderland away. Stop laughing: we’ve beaten them in each of the past three home games. Can Steven Fletcher or A N Other emulate Darren Bent, Ji Dong-won and Adam Johnson to make it four in a row? Our City ‘Who are You?’ volunteer, Louis Baxter*, found in a Twitter trawl, thinks not.

This week’s second ‘Who are You?’ appears before Pete Sixsmith has had a chance to report on the Capital One cup win over Southampton. Thursdays are always a little strained at Salut Towers but Sixer will pop up in due course …

West Brom, Sunderland, Norwich fans ‘are most stressed’ on the road, Man City the surliest

Jake will tell us they drive like saints in Spain
Jake will tell us they drive like saints in Spain even if Real and playing Barca

So new research says football fans are a menace behind the wheel when there’s a match on the radio and our teams are playing. So perhaps it’s a good idea to head on over to cheapautoinsurance.co if you need car insurance before heading out on the roads on match day.

And guess who is up there among the worst culprits. Us in second place, behind West Brom but ahead of Norwich supporters in terms of how stressed we become while listening to games on the car radio and trying to drive at the same time.

John McCormick would doubtless cast a sceptical eye on the methodology – where are the comparisons with non-football fans and their accident rates, for example? – but I shall pass on the details for you to decide whether they could have some validity.

Hong Kong diary: (4) singing in the rain, in the bars and in the street

photo(2) In the fourth and final part of his Hong Kong Diary, Paul Goldsmith peers  back through the miasma of alcohol and working girls to bring us up to date on the adventures of a Sunderland fan in that perfumed harbour which is Hong Kong.

First of all, I’d like to apologise for the delay in this final instalment, but as you can imagine it’s been fairly hectic and difficult to get on-line. Once again, the night before the match became a drunken haze. Tom, Lynne, Robbie and Carl decided, by all accounts, that during the day they would go and see the impressive big Buddha situated just outside town, leaving me to my own devices.

‘Who are You’ winners: Wigan. Then Man City, Man Utd, Norwich, Spurs

Jake presents this year's winners

The Salut! Sunderland jury has spoken.

And the verdict in our 2012-2013 “Who are You?” awards – the honours presented each season for the best interviews with opposing supporters before their teams play ours – ended up, by pure coincidence, as a final between Wigan Athletic and Manchester City.

With the same outcome …
