Dear Colin,
We needed to win today.
If you asked me what’s important for us now, it’s just to win games and to feel that we can be strong at home.
Of course a new group of players playing together for the first time – I think they were very brave in the first 20 minutes, very, very good.
And then of course the game went on and it was a bit tiring for a few of the players and some maybe tried to do too many difficult things instead of keeping it simple.
[There were] things that were missing; that last ball, that last cross, hitting the target with our shots.
It was tough because that last ball is the one that you need to manage with quality but I would say it’s difficult to analyse this game.
Oscar Ustari, Santiago Vergini and a few players that haven’t been playing like Modibo Diakite, Valentin Roberge and Charis Mavrias – they got 90 minutes under their belt today, which is great for them.
That was most important and of course being in the draw tomorrow.
Mavrias’ goal was very good, he didn’t think twice, it was a great strike and at that time it was what we needed.
We said let’s try to score a goal early and let’s keep going and trying to win the game in a different manner, but it wasn’t to be.
Every credit goes out to the opposition as well, they did very well.
I think the best part of today was winning and avoiding a replay.
Now we’ll see what the draw brings tomorrow.

Altidore wouldn’t be the answer in the stiffs if they were still playing in the Wearside league as they did for a short time when I was a youth.
I’m not fussed about the performance either. Two lads who had just got off the plane starting the game. They probably didn’t even know everyone’s name. Won with 75% of the possession, and kept a clean sheet. In the next round. Take that as it comes. A good week. How often can we say that?
That game worked better than a cup of Horlicks.
A potential banana skin has been averted, mission accomplished move on. Yes but Sunderland dominated the game against hardy but unpreparef to win opponents. Wherevwas Alitidore, he did not have one honest attempt against a team that were denied the ball, he at no time was able to unlock a defence that expected to be pumelled. We need a striket who can but the ball into the net on hard days, not one that didn’t trouble the keeper on an easy day. Lets focus on the positivess, Ba and Marvais are there for the future we can do well but we need a striker and Jozy isn’t the answer
Not on this performance he’s not…and its not just this one either.
