Pure Poyetry: ‘Stoke didn’t deserve to beat us,’ says the boss

Gus Poyet writes to Monsieur Salut after every game. It’s not the most exclusive of communications, going to thousands of other Sunderland fans, too. This is what he made of our exit from the Capital One Cup, robbing us of one of our chances of another trip to Wembley. Sixer’s Sevens spent the night with no access to the Comments section. This was not intentional – the site’s system was playing up, also preventing uploading of Jake’s images – but, as Salut! Sunderland’s deputy editor, Malcolm Dawson, said, this was perhaps no bad thing. Gus was more upbeat …

Dear Colin,

I think the result is difficult to accept because I do not think we deserved to lose the game.

We had better chances and moments in the game with an opportunity to go 2-1 up, but there were big decisions today that went against us a little bit.

We are disappointed to lose as we were at home and we wanted to do well in the cup, but now we need everybody including the fans to make sure we are united and come in stronger to win the game on Saturday.

When you have so many changes in the team you want to compete and start well with pace because it can take a while to get going.

The team responded and started well and everything was going well until their goal.

Even though they had a few shots it was nothing to worry about, it was just a period of adjustment at the back that allowed them into the position to score.

Saying that it didn’t affect our game and we were okay in the second half, but we need to be a little more clinical and not give anything away.

Thanks for your support,
Gus Poyet

  1. The difference between the 2 sides were the goalkeepers. Manone doesn’t need to worry about his place in the starting 11 going to Pantilimon any time soon.

  2. Let’s focus on the positives from last night.

    1. It was dead easy to park the car.
    2. There were no queues for the loos.
    3. It didn’t rain.
    4. Getting out of Sunderland was quick and relatively hassle free. We were on the A19 by 10.15.
    5. Commentary on the Liverpool/Middlesbrough penalty shoot out kept us entertained all the way from Rainton to the outskirts of Bishop Auckland.
    6. There were only three messages on my answerphone when I got in telling me that “records indicate I still haven’t claimed my fully government funded gas boiler.”

    Result!

  3. To a degree, I agree with him. I thought Butland had a great game (in contrast to our keeper – too tired to attempt to spell his name). Had we taken our chances, it could have been comfortable. N’Zonzi should have walked, and it was a definite foul for their winner.
However, we were very sloppy, and you could argue, we got exactly what that sloppiness deserved.

  4. If Poyet did not think they deserved to win he should reappraise his tactics as well as his thinking. In simple terms they defended better and scored more goals. We seemed to have more possession were too slow and wasted our chances.

There needs to be a huge improvement or the team that we have this year is possibly worse than last year’s scary mob. who at least in hte end showed that they were capable of beating the better teams.
