Hutch’s Patch. Ratings from Spurs don’t add up to much

Rob Hutchison: on his way home
Rob Hutchison

Rob Hutchison enclosed a short comment on today’s game:

“Hellish effort. Like watching MoN stuff towards his end. Possession stats of our PL games this season leave the alarm bells clanging madly.  Spurs(a) 26%, Eve(h) 33%, Sot(a) 36%, Boro(h) 47%, Mcfc(a) 23%.”

And followed this with poor marks for most in his one-word ratings

John McCormick writes: I would have been at this game had it been played at the original time. I suppose I should be glad I missed it; I thought the first half was mind-numbingly boring and the second half was little better, plus we lost through a soft goal.

But I know nowt about football, so I have to refer to the letter which our manager writes to M Salut (and one or two others) after each game to find out what really went on:

When Sunderland don’t play on Saturday there’s time for a wander over the Pennines

John McCormick: bored
John McCormick. Across the Pennines

Every now and then, when there is no meaningful football on I take a wander around the NorthWest, focusing on some of the clubs we might otherwise forget. I must add, however, that I do mention big’ns when necessary, as you can see, which brings me to Everton FC who, having gained plaudits for their supporters’ player of the month, went one better with their magnificent gesture to help Bradley Lowery. Well done EFC, who surely are, as Sixer said after they tonked us, a class club.

Tottenham Hotspur v SAFC ‘Who are You?’: still fuming about The Shelf

Martin Croake:
Martin Cloake

Martin Cloake* is a Spurs fan and an author, notably of the People’s History of Tottenham Hotspur. Here, he previews our game, looks at what’s going on at both clubs and avoids any predictions. I must admit that while not all Spurs WAYs have endeared the interviewees to us lot, and Martin has a ‘without wanting to insult SAFC’ moment, I loved his response to who should never have been allowed inside their cosy little ground …

Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland. Guess the score, and maybe win a mug

Jake: 'the doubt has currently been removed - defo no prize'
Jake:

John McCormick writes: At the start of the year I was at White Hart Lane, subbing for Sixer. I saw Jordan Pickford and the Hoff make their Premier League debuts, some six foot backs crowding Jermain Defoe out of the game and some soft goals after PVA put us in front.

The final score was 4-1, which I don’t think anyone predicted.

Sixer’s Everton Soapbox: an abysmal second half, a rude awakening

evertonsoapboxJohn McCormick writes: Jake sent a message with the graphic for this page. It began

“As soon as I read that Lukaku hadn’t scored for six months my heart sank.”

When I heard the commentators on Sky saying pretty much the same I had similar feelings. You just knew he would score. But for the first half I thought we did OK, although our midfield couldn’t find Defoe, who battled in vain.  Perhaps I have a rosy view, however, as TV doesn’t always show what went on all over the pitch. For a fuller picture we need to call on Pete Sixsmith, who was at the match and who witnessed that second half capitulation first hand:

John McCormick writes: I hate Monday games. I always have. I never expect us to do well in any televised game but I have the worst forebodings on Mondays. So it came as no surprise to me that we got nothing today.

But the nature of that nothing – that wasn’t something I expected. I gather that it also came as a shock to our new manager judging by the letter he sent to M Salut (and perhaps a couple of others) immediately after the game:

Jake: catch Sixer’s instant seven-word verdicts throughout the season

Pete Sixsmith sent a text at half time:

“Competed well against a strong Everton team”,

which I thought was a pretty fair description of the game up to then.

His second text was also a pretty fair description. You’ll find it below, where it conveys a message that doesn’t bode well for Spurs:
