Southampton v Sunderland ‘Guess the Score’: Altidore or Osvaldo to shine?

Jake casts doubt

Out of 13 entries,
no one was disloyal or Fulham-supporting enough last week to predict the 1-0 defeat, or any defeat come to that.

So the prize mug rolls merrily forward. Are Paolo Di Canio’s men about to do on their first Premier League travels of the new season what they could not manage at home?

The Saints are buoyant after making important close-season signings capped by the arrival of Dani – or is it Daniel? – Osvaldo for £15.1m fom Roma. They won at West Brom on the opening day and our Saints “Who are You?” previewer, Ben Gammon, has it down as a routine 3-1 home win.

Last season, Sunderland were also up against a confident Southampton side on a good run (11 points from five) but snatched a 1-0 win, thanks to a Steven Fletcher goal, at St Mary’s three days before Christmas. A repeat would go down nicely.

Have your say. I’ll allow Ian_SAFC to set the ball rolling with his prediction – posted to the “Who are You?” interview – of 2-1 to us, with Altidore getting one of them.

The first correct scoreline posted before kickoff wins the mug. Southampton fans are welcome to enter; the mug’s design will be adapted should one of them win.

Q: Our hero of recent times, Kevin Phillips, appears to have made more impact cleaning Shearer’s boots than on the field when he was with you. Any memories of his spell with Southampton?

A: When Phillips was with us as a schoolboy, he was considered to be too small to be a striker and was played as a right back instead! He scored 22 goals in 64 games during his second spell with the Saints. One of those was a winner against Portsmouth at home, so as you can imagine, I remember that goal of his more fondly than the rest.

  1. Saints 2-1 with Osvaldo scoring the winner. Either way I have a feeling Altidore will get a goal

  2. Southampton to win 2-0, or 3-1. You never travel well last season was a joke we should have a pen and like Fulham last week one shot on goal. Everyone in football is waiting for the Italians lid to blow off and it will just a matter of time. Safe trip down boys

    • Sorry, Stumpey, but both your scorelines have already been taken. The place is under invasion from cocky Saints!

  3. I am going for 3 1 to Southampton, they are far to good for Sunderland, Southampton will finish top ten this season

  4. I’m sticking to 3-0 for the Lads, I enjoyed the overall performance against Fulham. They’ll tighten up at the backnd once Jozy gets his first the second and third’ll not be long behind. (here’s hoping anyway)

  5. I personally thing the result will finish 4-0 saints, their too strong for Sunderland. And they built a solid well balanced side

  6. Continuing my tactic, I’m afraid to say that it’s Coventry City’s result again that leads me to

Liverpool Clones 0 – Bright Yellow Black Cats 4

  7. That Wanyama is supposed to be a decent player. We’ve got to watch him on Saturday.
For me, Sunderland win (1-2) with Altidore scoring.
