Sixer’s Sevens: SAFC 0 Liverpool 1. Flat and devoid of energy

NEWsevens copy

Pete Sixsmith described the first half of this defeat by Liverpool as ‘miserable’. Three minutes into the second half, Liam Bridcutt managed to get himself sent off for a soft second yellow. Ten men battled with enough effort but little quality to salvage a point. One of few players showing enterprise and guile, Adam Johnson, was hauled off. As a measure of SAFC woes, Danny Graham and Mikael Mandron came on (though Graham’s workrate was irreproachable). Expect Sixer to be in gloomy mood with his fuller account of yet another flat performance. He’s not happy with the team, nor does he see Gus Poyet as above criticism …

SAFC v Liverpool Guess the Score: send Jordan home pointless

Sunderland vs Liverpool. This has not been a happy fixture in most of SAFC’s seasons in the Premiership and Premier League.

From head-to-head stats at Liverpool Online, I calculate that in 13 top-flight meetings since the FA Cup final of 1992, which they won 2-0 of course, Sunderland have won three, two have been drawn and Liverpool have claimed all three points eight times.

Ruing the failure to nail Liverpool, grudging recognition of Newcastle boss, Hammers ahead

Thanks Jake
Thanks Jake

Even observers beyond the red and white segment of the North East can see that Newcastle United, “Geordie Nation” and “everyone’s second team” nonsense aside, are not an especially likeable football club.

The self-promotion can verge on the absurd. The babyish bans imposed on locally based reporters bring Mike Ashley into disrepute and make the job of honest communications staff a nightmare (even if, on a winning run, some Mags are at last willing to support the Stasi-like assault on free expression).

Chapman Report from Liverpool: fish, chips and nearly wrapping up the points

Robert Chapman
Robert Chapman

While Peter Sixsmith was ho-ho-hoing through parts of County Durham, Robert Chapman was stoically on an awayday to Anfield. Here, delayed a little by internet problems, is his report …

My first visit to Anfield
was the last day of season 1980/1. A goal from Stan Cummins ensured a 1-0 win which kept us in the First Division. Since then I have seen a number of draws, more defeats, but no such repeat of that first visit.

Sixer’s Sevens: Liverpool 0 SAFC 0. As solid as against Chelsea

Jake gives Sixer star billing
Jake gives Sixer star billing

Pete Sixsmith took a break from Sunderland-supporting duties and for once missed a game, though the beneficiaries were those children back in County Durham who caught his ho-ho-hoing as Santa. Meanwhile at Anfield, with Sixer keeping tabs on the sleigh radio, it was as if Man City never happened as the Lads carried on the good work of the game before, at home to Chelsea. Just another goalless draw but is was a decent game, with chances especially for Connor Wickham, and Sunderland were utterly deserving of the point …

Must we rely on Mignolet howlers or a Hendo stinker at Liverpool?

In truth, being a softy when it comes to players I like who have moved on, I’d be happiest of all to see Simon Mignolet play a blinder and Jordan Henderson score to cap a fine all-round performance for Liverpool. But Mignolet’s saves would just keep the score down and Hendo’s late screamer would be a consolation. Three-one to the Lads, a win built on our own abilities and an exceptional team display.

But Wednesday has left a lot of us feeling a little flat, even if Liverpool are not quite Man City.
