When you’re one down and your goalkeeper is injured in the first half, limiting the manager’s options to change things from the bench, the last thing you need is for one of your senior players to slip back into old habits and get himself sent off for a needless and reckless challenge in the middle of the field. Unfortunately Lee Cattermole has previous and once again proved that his qualities as a combative midfielder are negated by a total lack of self control and an inability to consider the bigger picture. So what does that say about Andrea Dossena? Perhaps he was worried that the bathwater would get cold. What other reason could he have to follow up the former skipper’s lunacy with his own moment of madness. Whatever qualities Gus Poyet is trying to instil in the team common sense obviously hasn’t been one of them. Pete Sixsmith wasn’t one of the 200 fans who left at half time – he stayed till the bitter end – but his seven word summing up accurately reflects his anguish …

November 2 2013 Hull City (1) SAFC (0) Damage limitation after appalling first half performance

October 27 2013 SAFC (1) 2 Newcastle United (0) 1 Bragging rights and a win. Good combination/ or Perfect Poyet puts another one over Pardew

October 19 2013 Swansea City 4 (0) SAFC 0 (0) No Poyet magic cure for abject failure*

October 5 2013 SAFC (1) 1 Manchester United (0) 2 Better side first half, outclassed in second

September 30 2013 SAFC (0) 1 Liverpool (2) 3 Spirit in abundance, undone by shoddy defending

September 24 2013 Capital One Cup 3rd Round: SAFC (1) 2 Peterborough United (0) 0 A solid performance without any touchline histrionics

September 21 2013 West Bromwich Albion 3 (1) SAFC 0 (0) Coach looks completely out of his depth

September 14 2013 SAFC (0) 1 Arsenal (1) 3 Performance far better than the result suggests

August 31 2013 Crystal Palace (1) 3 SAFC (0) 1

Nowhere near good enough for this league

August 27 2013 Capital One Cup 2nd Round: SAFC (0) 4 MK Dons (1) 2

Outplayed, outclassed, somehow got out of jail

August 24 2013 Southampton (0) 1 SAFC (1) 1

The point was better than the performance

August 17 2013 SAFC (0) 0 Fulham (0) 1 Ultimately little difference from previous two seasons

  1. I was told Cattermole’s wasn’t a red, though having seen it he gave the ref every chance to send him off. The late tackle on Johnson was just as bad however.

How many more chances can you give him? just when you thought it was safe, no bookings this season then he does that. Our midfield is a slight worry now, though I think Poyet will put Bardsley at left back next week.

  2. Pair of them should have the book thrown at them with particularly heavy fines. Any chance of building any kind of momentum blown out the water by two acts of stupidity.

Mind you Andy seemed to be more lenient in the 2nd half with a couple of poor challenges.

Poyet is certainly getting the full spectrum of SAFC’s bizzare antics in a very short time period.

  3. What a difference a week makes. Mind I would have rather got beaten by Chelsea today and won last week’s game.

  4. Please add “performance” to the seven. I was too busy thinking of going down to six men and getting it abandoned.

  5. Two very poor teams. The 9 men did far better than the 11.Surely the side has to be changed? It was ironic that the majority of our team in the second half were Bruce’s signings.I need my head examining for making the effort to be there.

  6. Famous win at Burnley with both full backs red carded back in 70s. But that side had balls, not sure this one has. (Half time comment – ed)
