Sheffield Utd vs Sunderland: cup fever or fear of cup runs?

Jake: ‘guess the score – just for fun’

Monsieur Salut writes: most of us like a good cup run. We may not turn up in big numbers any more for games in the early rounds but interest builds as each obstacle is cleared. As Wembley looms and interest turns to excitement, we even start to care about winning something as mundane as the Checkatrade Trophy.

So to Bramall Lane and the Football League Cup third round tie at Sheffield United.

We naturally consider ours to be a bigger club than theirs and historically that is hardly a controversial belief. But as things stand, they are a Premier League side – on merit – and we are striving for promotion from two divisions lower.

How will it go?

Sunderland start as underdogs. We did likewise at Burnley, fell behind and looked second best before bursting into life and winning 3-1 with a second half performance a number of Burnley fans were quick to applaud.

It won’t be the end of the world if we fail to repeat that remarkable achievements against the Blades. A honourable and narrow defeat would feel a lot better than losing key league games – hence my headline; are we less worried about losing a cup game than fearing missing out. again, on promotion?. A win would undoubtedly boost morale and self-belief.,

Tell us what you think. I am afraid the exercise must remain, for now, just for fun. But have as much fun as you wish with how the game will go. remembering that it will go straight to penalties if scores are level at 90 minutes.

Ha’way the Lads.

  1. We need to put out the returning to fitness lot and the young lads and don’t give a tuppence for the result, it a sideshow that cost us dearly last season, lets not make the same mistake this time. We have far more pressing issues to deal with.

We lose by the odd goal.

  2. The eternal optimist says they Will make big changes for the game and o will we but think they will want it more than us , I for one won’t blame Ross if we go out of this , maybe it’s what we need but take a good look at Pompey at the minute, the stats showed everything on Saturday We had 20 shots to their 5 61% of possession but can’t hit a barn door they came back to get a draw that’s positive, Ross has instilled a fighting spirit in them but can’t score the goals for them a 2-2 draw and win to the lads on pens
