Salut! Sunderland’s Week: bravado ahead of Chelsea, Greatest Escape memories, Rodwell comeback

Jake captures the theme

Standard practice around here is that an admirable band of stalwarts call by every day or so to see what Salut! Sunderland has been up to.

Hundreds more, and sometimes thousands, visit the site only when something new appears on newsnow.co.uk’s SAFC pages or a kind soul drops a link at Ready to Go or elsewhere.

The trick, when trying to avoid descent into insanity as a fan site editor, is to take it all in the stride. Must Not Fret about readership figures should be the mantra; let us be the low-circulation site for the thinking supporter and stop worrying about tabloid-level hits.

Salut! Sunderland’s Week: looking back at West Brom, forward to Manchester United

Jake captures the theme

There used to be a feature here called Salut! Sunderland’s Week. As you see, Jake even came up with an image for it.

In the end, it seemed too much like hard work, regurgitating the best of the offerings from these pages over the previous seven days or so, especially for those too busy or disinclined to visit the site daily.

Rarely, we unearth the series. Today’s an example for the simple reason that the first home game of the season takes places tomorrow and is against Manchester United.

French Fancies: Steed marches on and Nancy fans show Sunderland the way

This week, we combine a very brief Salut! Sunderland’s Week with an even briefer French Fancies

We’re not talking A level or degree stuff.

Salut’s Week: Manchester City opposing view was ‘the best we’ve ever had’

Jake calls for Eastlands heroics

That should of course have been a question in the headline for our occasional – ie not necessarily weekly – look back at the week just gone. The accolade was awarded by Jeremy Robson, who writes here regularly both as a contributor and reader, to a fine set of answers from Simon Curtis, a City fan and blogger based in Lisbon who paused long enough from the serious business of sampling fine Portuguese wines to give his thoughts about our two clubs and today’s game. Others commenting on Simon’s responses to the Salut! Sunderland questionnaire were also full of praise. Must be the quality of the questions …

Salut!’s Week: on drawing at Arsenal, gloryseeking and guessing the Reading score

Jake downplays the prize value ... ...

Salut! Sunderland’s headlong rush to bankruptcy leads to another outing for the win-a-mug feature, Guess the Score.

Be the first to post the correct final score on SAFC v Reading FC and you win. If you are right, but your comment was delayed for moderation, don’t worry. Time of receipt will be clear behind the scenes and will be honoured. If the winner supports Reading, I will amend the mug design accordingly.

Salut! Sunderland’s Week: your chance to sway Player of the Season awards

More from the magic camera of Jake's pal, Tony Roffe

This week’s review of what has been going on should probably discuss Spurs and Everton. But there does not seem to be much more to say about either – you can always check out what Pete Sixsmith made of each game by clicking on this link, which gives you the full Sixer’s Soapbox archive – so I will devote most of it to a reminder of the Salut! Sunderland straw poll to find the Player and Young Player of the Season.
